Maria Taferl Basilica
Maria Taferl - an important pilgrimage church.
The treasury is especially interesting, a room splendidly, colorfully painted in the style of the Folk Baroque, including frescoes on the ceilings which depict the creation story, and others on the walls portraying accounts of miracles.
Melk Monastary
Melk Monastery - regarded for more than 900 years as the spiritual and cultural center of the region.
Benedictine Melk Monastery is located in Lower Austria, close to the town of Melk an der Donau. Emblem of the Wachau region, it is also a World Heritage Site. Visitors touring the monastery's rooms are introduced to this abbey's fascinating history..
Schloss Schallaburg
Schallaburg, located about 5 km from Melk, is one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles north of the Alps.
The castle's oldest roots extend back to the Middle Ages, still to be found today in its Romanesque residential tract and the Gothic chapel. It was in 1572 that Schallaburg acquired its characteristic appearance: Emulating the palazzi of Italy, the affluent Losensteiner family created a stately home, whose impressive silhouette can still be espied from far afield to this very day. The spacious, idyllic "Turnierhof", with its broad, open staircases, attests to the family's wealth and love for art, as does the unique sculpture work of the two-storey terracotta arcaded courtyard. The multi-faceted beauty of the Schlallaburg, set amidst the picturesque landscapes of the Mostviertel, makes it a true magnet for aficionados of beauty and culture..
Krems an der Donau
At the far end of the Wachau, one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube Valley, lies the enchanting twin town of Krems-Stein. Krems an der Donau is always worth a visit, regardless of the time of year!
There are not many Austrian towns that offer such a diversity of cultural, historical and culinary highlights, as does the twin town of Krems-Stein. Nestled on the eastern fringe of the Wachau, this more than 1,000 years old town captivates visitors, not least with its historic buildings - named in the year 2000, incidentally, to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
